Most advice about advertising balloons pushes toward bigger. Bigger reads further, bigger looks more serious, bigger justifies the invoice. That advice is wrong often enough to be worth arguing with. There are real situations where a smaller unit does the job better, costs a third as much to run, and does not create problems the big one would.

The small option, specifically

The compact end of the range is a 5.5-foot helium sphere at $350, plus $27 shipping.

It flies on the same principle as a 13-foot blimp — tethered helium, up at height, visible from distance. It holds about 87 cubic feet of helium, and it lifts far less, which turns out to be the point rather than the drawback.

Compare running costs directly. A sphere fill is about $130 of helium. A 13-foot blimp fill is about $255. A single 200 cubic foot tank, at roughly $300 from a welding-gas supplier, covers about two months of sphere flying including top-offs. That same tank barely covers one blimp fill and change.

Where small genuinely wins

**Tight sites.** A blimp needs room to move on its tether and 15 feet of clear ceiling indoors. A restaurant frontage, a strip-mall unit, or a small dealership corner may simply not have the space. A sphere does.

**Colour over message.** A blimp earns its price because it carries full-colour artwork on both sides — a name, a logo, a sale message. If nobody is close enough to read anything anyway, you are paying for print nobody sees. A sphere delivers motion and colour, which is what actually catches the eye at distance.

**Multiple points instead of one.** Four spheres down a frontage cost $1,400 and cover a long sightline. One blimp costs $1,526 and covers one point. For wide lots, a run of spheres often reads better from a moving car than a single unit does.

**Lower stakes in bad weather.** The 25 mph wind rule applies to everything that flies. But losing a $350 sphere is an annoyance. Losing a $1,526 blimp with your artwork on it is a bad week and a three-to-seven-day wait for a replacement.

**Indoor and event use.** Spheres work in spaces where a blimp is simply too much object.

Where small is the wrong call

Be equally honest about this.

If the goal is to be read from a highway, buy the blimp. Nothing about a sphere carries a message at that distance.

If the site is a homebuilder community entrance or a car lot on a fast road, the blimp is the correct tool and the sphere will underdeliver. Roughly a hundred blimps fly every weekend for homebuilders through one California operator alone — that market settled the question a long time ago.

If branding matters, the blimp is the only one carrying it. Artwork on both sides is included in the $1,526 price rather than billed separately, which changes the maths more than people expect.

Running one

Setup is the same for both. First inflation takes reading the instructions; after that it is about ten minutes with one person. Both deflate, fold, and store flat.

Helium leaves at about one percent per day regardless of size. Top off every three to seven days. On a sphere that is a small cost; on a blimp it runs about $2.50 per day of flying.

Flight height is 120 feet, deliberately below the 150-foot line at which the FAA becomes involved in tethered balloons. Within five miles of controlled airspace, call the local tower first.

A helium fill hose, if you need one, is $45. Every unit ships with a choice of a 120-foot tether line or a 105-foot metallic pennant line.

Shipping and lead time

Both ship UPS Ground from the factory in North Carolina, two to five business days anywhere in the continental United States, in a single 60 by 26 by 3 inch carton. Spheres are $27 to ship, blimps $135.

Spheres in stock go out in one to two days. Blimps take three to seven days from artwork approval, because the artwork is printed to order.

The honest recommendation

Start by answering one question: does someone need to *read* something, or just *see* something?

If they need to read it, buy the blimp. If they only need to see it, buy spheres, spend a third as much on helium, and put the difference into more of them.
